This survey of world history begins in prehistory and follows human cultural development until CE 1450 on a thematic rather than chronological path. The class looks at themes of human change over time such as the spread of humans out of Africa; the shift to agriculture and urbanization; the rise of city-states and also horseback nomadism; the classical cultures of India, South America, Greece, Rome, and China; the rise of major world religions, the Silk Road and other trade routes, Asian and European exploration, and the status of the world on the edge of the modern era.
